The country ended up getting one of the most severe and alarming wake-up calls over its ‘exploitable’ Labour Laws after the sad news of a young CA dying due to an ‘overwhelming workload’ hit headlines all over India. For those unaware, 26-year-old Anna Sebastian Perayil joined the multinational consulting firm Ernst & Young (EY) in Pune a few months back, where ‘work pressure’ leading to health complications took her life, as per her mother Anita Augustine. Ever since the incident went viral, more employees are coming forward with their own struggles that they are facing amid a ‘toxic work culture’. Narrating a similar incident, an MNC employee shared about his office and how he and his colleagues worked for 17 to 18 hours. Sharing screenshots of his Whatsapp chat with a fellow employee, the man opened up about attending a 5 AM office meeting.
The post also exposed how despite working for ‘20 hours’, the company did not allow the employees to ‘charge for more than 15 hours’. For those unaware, charging in MNCs is basically punch-in and punch-out time. The man also chastised the ‘bragging culture’ where he talked about his seniors who used to brag about working till 5 in the morning. By the looks of the post, the man has now left the said MNC.
The social media post , soon after getting shared, pulled all kinds of reactions where a majority of people opened up about facing similar struggles. Some also chastised the Government for not coming up with stricter Labour Laws, while the rest criticized MNCs and their ‘toxic work culture’.
The post was shared on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), by the handle ‘arey_jainsaab’. The post was captioned, “With EY case getting some lights. I would like to share my personal experience at D. Attaching some screenshots of chats with my teammate - friend where we were discussing the work and our health at 5 AM in the morning. We use to work for around 20 hours and they won’t even let us charge more than 15 hours. I can totally understand what Anna would have gone through. Always remember you are just an employee number for them. But for your family you are everything. Corporate life is tough. Glad that I was able to get out from there in time.”
“I’ve always noticed that there is some kind of flex in office always that who works for larger time. I’ve always seen my senior colleagues brag that: Arey tum 11 baje log out kar diye? Mene toh 5 baje tak kaam kara. (We used to log out at 11 PM. I have also worked till 5 AM)No work-life balance. Completely brainwashed slaves,” the internet user further wrote. The post was shared yesterday and pulled more than 18K views from people.

Taking to the comment section, people shared their take. “I am surprised that they are letting you charge 15 hrs. At KPMG we work 16 hrs during the season stretching to 6 months. And we are not allowed to charge more than 8 hrs. And if we charge even 1 hr less than 8 hrs any day we are asked to give reasons for the same,” a user said.
“It's happening due to no law to safeguard employees in India. These companies can not exploit employees overseas due to strong laws,” added a second person. “Never knew, after studying CA day and night, you have to work even more. I used to think being a CA life is easy,” added another. “Wow. Never imagined audit firms have such a work schedule. No work/life balance at all. Thanks for posting. Hope something positively changes after the death of that young girl,” added another.
