AI Imagines Indian Disney Princesses: Just a few years ago, if someone would have asked about AI reimagining some of the most bizarre yet creative ideas, it would have sounded more like a plot from Sci-fi movies. However, it's 2024 and the technology of AI has stopped sounding like ‘alien tech’- that’s how advanced it has become. With that in mind, an artist used AI to reimagine Disney princesses as Indian women. However, despite the idea being intriguing, the result ended up rubbing the netizens the wrong way. ‘Why’, you ask? Well, the reason seemingly left people concerned about the extreme beauty standards that even AI was somehow able to push.
From excessive ‘bling’ to body figures that were way too skinny, the internet pointed out the way even technology somewhat standardised women's body image. Many also were evidently against the use of AI itself, as they believed that an artist instead, would have done an excellent job with realistic Indian representation.
The post was shared on social media platform Instagram, by the handle ‘hashimali90’. The post was captioned, “If the Disney princesses were in 1950s South Asia. Just been fooling around with mid-journey to create these." The post was later re-shared by ‘the.olio.stories’.

The post went viral and left people reacting in all kinds of ways. Most people were upset over the extreme representation of ‘harsh beauty standards’, while the rest commented on the excessive use of ‘bling’ in the images. A few also loved the idea. The post was shared a while back and pulled 34K likes from people.

Taking to the internet, netizens expressed their disappointment. “I mean the idea is great and I love the visuals, BUT: why are they so painfully skinny- and surely an actual artist could have designed/drawn these, why to use AI,” a user said. “Must we always feed the stereotype that South Asia= Extreme Bling. We have such a vast variety of art throughout the subcontinent. Perhaps the problem lies with using AI. An actual artist would definitely have done a better job at reimagining Disney princesses,” added a second person.
“I mean come on Rapunzel had to have that desi-strong hair covered in beautiful Indian accessories,” said a third person. “From an artist's point of view, the proportions and limbs in general are horrendous. The mermaid is a nightmare and only Cinderella kinda passes the bar. I guess it works for casual viewers,” added a fourth person.
