Welcoming the beginning of a new year in the country, Cambodia on April 13, celebrated the Khmer New Year and garnered countless greetings from all over the world for the occasion. However, in India, it was the Indian ambassador to Cambodia, Devyani Khobrogade, who stole headlines more than the occasion itself. Taking to social media, the X (formerly Twitter) handle of India in Cambodia shared some breathtaking pictures of Khobrogade, where she was dressed as a ‘Khmer Apsara’, in her unique greeting for Cambodians. Her ‘deep admiration for Khmer culture and tradition’ was also highlighted in the same post, along with her pictures.
However, the photoshoot ended up drawing more negative attention, than any kind of praise. Most people were quick to question her controversial past in the US, while some commented on the photoshoot and the entire idea. For those unaware, Khobrogade, an Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer, was reportedly accused of ‘visa fraud’ and ‘false statements’ during her New York’s ‘diplomatic tenure’, for which the diplomat later faced an arrest.
Apart from this, Khobragade made a comeback in the spotlight for another controversy, where she was accused of paying below the ‘minimum wage limit’ in the US to her maid, which as per the accused were ‘baseless’ accusations.
Now, with her recent photoshoot going viral, she is back in the eye of the storm, as people recalled all her past controversies and demanded answers on her ‘Government profile’ despite having a history of being arrested.
The video was shared on X, on the official handle ‘indembcam’. The post was captioned, “Ambassador Devyani Khobragade has a deep admiration for Khmer culture and tradition. Embracing the spirit of Khmer New Year, she elegantly dressed as a Khmer Apsara, embodying the rich bond of our civilizations. Wishing all our friends a joyous Khmer New Year celebration.”

Taking to the comment section, people shared their take. “This is what you do when you want to bill your fantasy photoshoot to the Govt of India,” a user said. “That’s why people want to be civil servants. You can break the law, exploit employees leading to a massive diplomatic crisis- but still keep your job and fail upwards,” added a second person. “I am amazed at the Indian External Affairs Ministry that a woman accused of a crime in the USA can still become Ambassador and represent India!” wrote a third.
“After her controversy involving the maid, how is she still in service I always wonder. And what is she doing here really? Always finds a weird way to attract attention,” joined a fourth person. “Hey @MEAIndia, maybe you should read all the replies and quotes to this tweet. Although I don’t agree with the language used by some users, they ask a very valid question. How the heck a tainted person be appointed as an ambassador to represent Indian interests?” asked another.
