Chess World Cup 2023: The final match for the title of World Chess Champion 2023 came to an end on August 24, with Indian prodigy Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa clinching the spot of the first runner-up. Norwegian Grandmaster Magnus Carlsen bagged the cup after a thrilling tiebreak opposite the 18-year-old Indian prodigy.

“Praggnanandhaa is the runner-up of the 2023 FIDE World Cup! Congratulations to the 18-year-old Indian prodigy on an impressive tournament! On his way to the final, Praggnanandhaa beat, among others, world #2 Hikaru Nakamura and #3 Fabiano Caruana! By winning the silver medal, Praggnanandhaa also secured a ticket to the #FIDECandidates,” read FIDE's X (formerly Twitter) post on Praggnanandhaa.


Soon after the game ended, the social media was overcome by reactions from the netizens as they congratulated Praggnanandhaa for the engaging match and tough fight with one of the finest chess players in the world.

American chess grandmaster Hikaru Nakamura became the second runner-up, followed by Italian-American chess grandmaster Fabiano Caruana at the FIDE World Cup 2023. Apart from the big win, Praggnanandhaa marked history as he became the first Indian after Viswanathan Anand to reach the semifinals of the FIDE World Cup. Before this, the 18-year-old prodigy became the youngest player to defeat Carlsen in an online elite rapid chess tournament.
