Viral Video: Forget exotic postcards and Bollywood song scenes, the way some people abroad imagine India can be straight out of a comedy sketch. For many Indians living overseas, answering questions about their homeland often feels like being part of a never-ending stand-up act. From “Do you ride elephants to school?” to “Isn’t India just villages?”, the stereotypes just keep rolling in. One Indian woman, Sheenam Gautam, decided she’d had enough of these bizarre queries and turned them into a hilarious Instagram video. In her post, she listed 15 of the most ridiculous questions she’s been asked while living abroad and paired each one with a sarcastic reply that had the internet in splits.

Questions ranged from “Do you have WiFi in India?” (“Yes, and sometimes it’s faster than your brain”) to “Do you eat curry every day?” (“Only on days ending with Y”). Others were just as absurd: “You speak such good English!” (“Thanks… I learned it in England’s favourite colony”) or “Do you know Shah Rukh Khan?” (“Sure, we have chai together every Sunday… in my dreams”).

Her witty answers quickly went viral, earning nearly 7,500 reactions in just two days. While some viewers laughed at the absurdity, others pointed out how such questions still reflect outdated and stereotypical views of India. "The 4th one happens a lot, I think. Happened to me as well on my 1st job in the US. India has the second-highest English-speaking population, second only after the US," a user wrote.

"You don't need sunscreen tops the list... Then comes, you must be a software engineer, you probably know 4 languages (this is actually a true assumption), a landlord once showed me a tiny room of 8m2 and said I will feel comfortable there since I am from India (I'm not going into details of the response he got but he'll remember for the rest of his life for sure)" a second user wrote.

"Don’t worry, even I get asked like that, even though I am coming from Chennai, one of the most developed cities and coolest in India. Also, the question you all speak Hindi? Do cows come into your homes, and would you drive them on the streets?" added a third user. "At least people identify u as Indian, in my case, some people straight up ask in Spanish, 'Are you Mexican?'" added another user.
