In a world where the elders are often left alone, one village in Kerala has come up with a heartwarming way to bring generations closer. The Ellikulam Panchayat in Idukki district has started a unique initiative called ‘Time Bank’, where the time you spend helping senior citizens today will be repaid to you when you grow old.

A Bank Where Time Is The Currency:

In the 'Time Bank,' instead of depositing cash, you have to deposit hours of kindness. Volunteers can register with the Panchayat and spend time helping elderly residents in their community. It could be something as simple as taking them to the hospital, buying medicines, running small errands, or even sitting with them for a friendly chat. Each hour they spend helping is added to their 'time account.' Isn't it beautiful?

How The Magic Works?

When these volunteers reach old age, the Panchayat will return the same amount of time and care through new volunteers. The best part? There’s no money involved, only time and compassion. It’s a beautiful circle of giving that ensures no one feels forgotten.

Inspired By Japan’s Furei Kippu Model:

The idea comes from Japan’s well-known ‘Furei Kippu’ system, where people earn 'time points' by helping the elderly and can use those points later in life when they need support. Kerala’s version aims to build the same sense of mutual care and connection within local communities.

A Solution To Modern Loneliness:

With families becoming smaller and youngsters moving to cities for work, the elderly feel lonelier. Initiatives like the Time Bank can bring comfort, company, and a sense of belonging to them. For the youth, it’s not just volunteer work; it’s a chance to learn valuable lessons from the life experiences of seniors.

A Step Toward A Kinder Future:

The Panchayat President shared, “We want every youth to understand that what they contribute today will be useful to them tomorrow. This initiative promotes social security and strengthens human relationships.” Doctors also believe that programs like Time Bank help reduce depression among the elderly while building empathy among younger generations. The Ellikulam Panchayat’s thoughtful initiative reminds us that sometimes, the greatest gift we can give isn’t money or things, it’s our time.
