Viral Reddit Post: Fed up with the high prices of apartments in big cities, one Reddit user came up with a unique idea: living full-time on a boat! His serious yet unusual question has now gone viral and sparked a huge discussion online. In his Reddit post, the man shared his struggles with homeownership, saying he couldn’t afford flats in places like Bengaluru, Chennai, or Hyderabad. "I am unable to afford flats in any of the Indian cities - Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad. I am already aged out, so I won't be in workable age, for EMI's," he wrote. What he asked was simple but surprising: “Is it legal in India to stay in a boat?”
He explained that he's no longer in a position to take home loans or pay EMIs. Instead, he’s thinking of building a houseboat with a kitchen, bathroom, and two small rooms. “All the cities have few lakes, can I park these boats on the lakes or the shore and live there?” he asked. He added that a boat might even be safer during floods: “Moreover, if floods come, I will still be floating.”
The post instantly caught people’s attention. While some found his thinking creative, many users advised against it. A few said living on a boat in Indian cities isn’t practical, and others suggested buying property in smaller towns or rural areas instead.

The post shared under the username 'r/indianrealestate' a few hours ago received many upvotes from Reddit users. One user wrote, "I love your plan, the builder lobby must be having wet dreams, wonder where you will find a lake since they have filled the lakes and built apartments." "Can't you just buy a home on the outskirts of a City? It won't be as much fun as a boat, but at least it will be more practical," a second user added. "I guess you’ll face issues with address-related matters like having no permanent address for identity proofs, getting stuff delivered to you, etc," wrote a third user.
"Have you considered buying a house in a rural village area? Just an example- a village near the city of Patan, Gujarat, can get an independent house about 800-900 sqft with land for about 10-12 lacs, India would have thousands of this kind of villages," a fourth user added. "You can buy houses in cities like Pune with that budget. If you put together 5-10 more lakhs, you can get yourself a 1BHK here in the city. If you go to the outskirts, then you may be able to get a 2BHK with a view," added a fifth user.
