Reddit Viral Post: What happens when someone with a luxury lifestyle claims to be middle class? It sparks a huge debate online and that’s exactly what happened on Reddit recently. A user shared a post asking, “Who is actually middle class in India?” But instead of starting a meaningful discussion, the question triggered a major backlash. In the post, the Redditor explained, “Let me share a tale of my father’s friend, he lives in a huge penthouse, has 8 staff round the clock and 6 cars – and still calls himself middle class.”

The user added that even in their own home, “we have 5 round-the-clock staff and 4 cars, and we can easily afford vacations abroad, yet my parents say we’re middle class.” The story didn’t stop there. The Redditor continued, “My driver, who earns a decent living but nothing too big, also considers himself middle class. And the maid who works at his house says the same!”

With so many people claiming the same label, the user finally asked, “So if everyone is middle class here, who is supposed to be the upper and the lower class?” While some found the post funny, many slammed it for being out of touch.

The post received many comments from Reddit users. "Is this a rich people’s joke that I am too poor to understand?" a user wrote. "You like being middle class till the time someone calls you middle class, and at that moment you start flexing," a second user added. "People always think they dont have enough money even when they have it. Why do you think these billionaires are always in the race to make more money when their entire 10 coming generations dont have to worry if they stop working," a third user added.

"In India, ‘middle class’ is less about income and more about vibes. You can have 4 cars, a penthouse, 5 staff, and still call yourself middle class—because admitting you’re rich feels like asking for judgment or an IT raid. It’s not a class, it’s a coping mechanism," added a fourth user. "If you consider yourself middle class. 90% population would require a BPL card," added another user.

"In my opinion, families earning 3.5-8 lakhs are middle class, you could probably stretch the upper limit to 10 lakhs for big cities. Beyond that, it's just 'well off/rich' families trying to fit in by pretending to be middle class," a sixth user added. "In my opinion, the middle class is someone who lives paycheck to paycheck and cannot save more than abt 15% of their monthly income. Their entire income goes into survival," added another user. "The middle class feels dependent upon the city also. Like owning a crore worth 2 bhk flat might feel like the middle class in Mumbai, while a similar thing makes you feel rich in small cities or towns," another user added.
