Sir Nils Olav III, a penguin, became the third-highest-ranking officer in the Norwegian Army after being promoted to the rank of Major General. The high-ranking bird, residing in the Edinburgh Zoo, has also become the highest-ranking penguin in the world. The news was shared by the Edinburgh Zoo on their social media handle. Sir Nils Olav III earned the title of Major General Sir Nils Olav III, Baron of the Bouvet Islands and the official mascot of His Majesty the King’s Guard of Norway, after the promotion.
The promotion was bestowed to Sir Nils Olav III during a special ceremony, during the visit by His Majesty the King’s Guard Band and Drill Team of Norway. The zoo shared the announcement on its official X (formerly Twitter) handle with the caption, “Arise, Sir Penguin The highest-ranking penguin in the world, Sir Nils Olav III, has been promoted to Major General by the Norwegian King's Guard Sir Nils now holds the third highest rank in the Norwegian Army!”

The post included pictures of Sir Nils Olav III being saluted by the authorities. The bird’s new rank and badge were also shared. The post garnered a lot of attention as the people saluted Sir Nils Olav III. Many others found the ceremony adorably cute.
Taking to the comment section, the people shared their views. "That penguin is better paid than me congrats sir!" said a user. "What do they pin the medal to?" asked a curious user. "Gratulerer, generalmajor!" said a third. "I can't be the first to point out that he is the very model of a modern major general," added a fourth. "How amazing is that?! He’s so special. I hope he gave them his customary salute!!" said a fifth.

During the ceremony, a choreographed parade was held and was attended by 160 uniformed soldiers of His Majesty the King of Norway’s Guard. The tradition of honouring penguins began after the Norwegian King's Guard adopted a penguin during a visit to the zoo in 1972.
