Amid emerging controversy, HarperCollins has stepped forward to publish Sonia Gandhi’s memoir “Belonging”, days after Penguin India’s exit from the project. The book, “Belonging: A Journey Of Love”, is expected to hit book shelves on November 10.

Sharing a post on X, Harper Collins wrote, “HarperCollins India will publish Belonging: A Journey of Love by Sonia Gandhi. The long-awaited memoir will be published in India on 10 November 2026.

How Did Social Media Users React To The Announcement
Upon learning about the update, several netizens praised the step, congratulating the publishing house. Some claimed that the book would break records. Some asked whether a Hindi translation of the book would be provided or not.

Penguin Refused To Publish Memoir
A week ago, Penguin Random House India (PRHI) stated clarified that it is not the publisher of Belonging in India, following reports that it had withdrawn from releasing the memoir after Gandhi allegedly rejected proposed editorial changes.
“Penguin Random House India is not the publisher of ‘Belonging’ in India. Any suggestion that Penguin Random House India decided not to publish ‘Belonging’ because the author declined editorial changes does not accurately reflect the circumstances," the publisher had said in its statement.
The publishing house added that providing recommendations and fact workers comes under the usual process before publishing any book. "Throughout the relevant discussions, Penguin Random House India's position was that we remained willing and keen to publish the book. We will not comment further on confidential discussions with the author," the statement added.’
What Does The Book Contain?
Sonia Gandhi’s memoir will cover her journey starting from her childhood spent in Italy, how she met then Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, her arrival to India, following her marriage, entry to Indian politics and so on. The book will also cover the tragic deaths in Gandhi family, including Indira Gandhi, Sanjay Gandhi and her husband Rajiv Gandhi.
Additionally, the memoir will also cover parts on her decision not to become prime minister after the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance came to power following the 2004 Lok Sabha election. On the book, Sonia Gandhi said, “Much has been written about my family, but few narratives were able to reach into the truth of their motivations, their actions and even their human failings…My story also offers readers a unique perspective of the social and political changes I have witnessed for six decades.”
