Viral Video: We all kind of already knew that we will soon be ‘a bit too much’ technologically advanced for almost everything, but ‘religious advancement’ is surely a new field and social media are confusing. Turning the ‘japa mala’ into a ‘digital beads counting device’, a video of a user trying the device was shared online and immediately went viral. For those not aware, a ‘japa mala’ or mala is used in several religions where a devotee counts a certain number of beads in the form of devotion and meditation. However, its ‘digital’ version has left the internet with a mixed reaction. The said device was also seen on the online shopping app ‘Amazon’, in multiple colours, priced at Rs 227.
The video was shared on the social media site X (formerly Twitter) by the handle ‘LifeOfStardust’. The post was captioned, “Maala bhi digital kar di inn logo ne (They even made the Mala diginat).”

The video instantly went viral and triggered a reaction on the internet. Most people loved the new device and called it convenient, while others said that the device wouldn’t work as Hindus do the prayer with ‘Rudraksha’ beads. A few found it hilarious and called it an ‘Uncles ka fidget spinner’. The video was shared yesterday and pulled 496K views from people.
Taking to the comment section, people shared their take. “Uncles ka fidget spinner,” said a user. “Some things should be left as it is,” added a second person. “I thought the whole point of that mala was that it had 108 beads and not just about counting them. Not sure tho,” said a third user. “Tbh I found nothing wrong with this. It is kinda cool and goes with the current time as well. You need Gen Z kinda stuff to encourage and attract them towards your roots,” said a fourth person.
“Itna bhi aage nai badhna tha (We didn’t have to be this advanced),” added a next. “Hindus do their Mala either with Rudraksh or Tulsi beads. This won’t work for them,” said a sixth user.
