Viral Video: 63-year-old Desmond Clack witnessed the phrase ‘survival of the best’ turning into reality in its prime while he was on a tour to Africa. While enjoying the beauty of the wild during a morning safari in Botswana’s Chobe National Park in Southern Africa, Clack witnessed a horrifying scene that left him, and the internet sad. A video of the same was shared on social media, which immediately went viral. In the video, a mother elephant came to a small pond to quench its thirst along with its two calves. However, the three were unaware of the underlying danger in the form of a pack of lions. What happened next left everything grieving.
As the trio began to leave the spot, one of the calves tripped and fell prey to the lions. Realising that, the mother elephant rushed into action and charged toward the attacker, only to leave the other calf alone. As the poor mother released the danger, it was compelled to go back to the other calf as the first one was taken over by the deadly pack. The incident soon went viral and gained all kinds of sorrowful reactions from people.
The post was shared on Youtube, by the handle ‘Latest Sightings’. The video was captioned, “Mother Elephant Gives Up on a Twin to Save the Other from Lions.”

Taking to the comment section, people shared their take. “That's less of a sacrifice and more of a severely overwhelmed situation,” a user said. “If only the mother had another adult elephant to help,” commented a second user. “I don't think the mother did that, the baby elephant stumbled and they got it. The mother tried to retrieve it, but it was too late. There was no ‘surrender’ or sacrifice here,” added a third. “I could not just sit and watch nature take its course,” said next.
“Those people filming this should be standing outside of the truck instead of on the inside,” commented a fifth person. “Wasn’t sacrificed, it chased after a lion when it didn’t need to and the calf slipped whilst running away. The Mother also tried to save it,” commented next.
