You must be aware of Bengaluru’s infamous rent culture where tenants are often reduced to mere ‘candidates’ as several instances of landlords asking for their tenant’s biodata and CV have come forward on social media. But now, it seems like there is a new ‘opponent’ in the market. Maybe not exactly new, but surely a rising competitor; Mumbai. The rent culture of the ‘city of dreams’ has reached a new low as its rents have skyrocketed further high. Exemplifying the same, a post was recently shared on the internet, where a man was seen chastising the rent culture in the city. The said post shared a picture of an old Chawl, which advertised for a 1BHK room in the same locality. Believe it or not but the rent that was being asked for the tiny room was Rs 45,000 per month, whereas the selling point, as per the picture, was the chawl’s ‘old vibes’.
The Mumbai apartment post received countless reactions after getting shared and going viral. Most people chastised the advertisement and dubbed it part of corruption and capitalism in India, while the rest shared jokes on the same.
The post was shared on X (formerly Twitter), by the handle ‘thehadesofdead’. The post was captioned, “Purani chawl ko old school/old vibes book 45k rent pr de rhe capitalism has commodified poverty to a next level (They are calling an old chawl ‘old school/old vibes’ and are taking 45k as rent for it).” The post was shared yesterday and pulled more than 81K views from people.

Taking to the comment section, people shared their take. “The rest for the house is just 5k, it's the Teakwood aesthetics that will cost 40k. Chill guys, it's just old vibes,” a user said. “45k for a common toilet shared by 200 others? Errr,” commented a second person. “Kya bhai..loot macha rakhi hai (What is this? People are being looted),” added a third person.
“Location, location, location! Also, chawl with a split air conditioner!!” added another. “Product 4th world ka marketing 1st world metropolitan (The product is of the 4th world but the marketing is of the 1st world),” commented a fifth person. “A=B, B=C then A=C. The system is corrupt. Society is part of the system. We are part of the society. Human greed has no limit,” added another.
