US President Donald Trump has said that he will talk to Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Monday with a view to negotiate a ceasefire in the Russia-Ukraine war.The talks, according to Trump, are focused on halting the “bloodbath” claiming over 5,000 soldiers weekly.
Trump announced the news on his social media site, Truth Social, stating that he will start the day with a 10 a.m. call to Putin followed by a call with Zelenskyy. He further stated that consultations with NATO leaders would come next to discuss the possibilities of peace.
"I will be speaking, by telephone, to president vladimir putin of russia on monday, at 10:00 a.M. The subjects of the call will be, stopping the “bloodbath” that is killing, on average, more than 5000 russian and ukrainian soldiers a week, and trade. I will then be speaking to president zelenskyy of ukraine and then, with president zelenskyy, various members of nato. Hopefully it will be a productive day, a ceasefire will take place, and this very violent war, a war that should have never happened, will end. God bless us all!!!" Trump wrote.
Trump Open To Meet Putin
The diplomatic push comes after Trump expressed his interest in meeting Putin “as soon as we can set it up” during a business roundtable in Abu Dhabi. His statement follows recent peace talks between Zelenskyy and the leading European leaders, such as French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, and Polish PM Donald Tusk. Zelenskyy reiterated Ukraine’s readiness for rapid peace efforts, stating that if Russia refuses a full and unconditional ceasefire, stronger sanctions must be enforced. “Our position is clear — if the Russians reject peace, pressure must increase,” Zelenskyy posted on X.
Meanwhile, Russia and Ukraine last week conducted their first direct peace negotiations in three years in Istanbul, during which both nations agreed to release 1,000 prisoners of war on each side. Russia's top negotiator, Vladimir Medinsky, said both nations will soon submit formal proposals for a ceasefire.
Vance-Zelenskyy High-Level Meeting?
Adding to this, US Vice President JD Vance and Zelenskyy will both be present at the inauguration of Pope Leo XIV, setting the stage for another possible top-level discussion. A top aide to Zelenskyy told Reuters that the Ukrainian President “would be happy to meet with Vance and other attending leaders,” as he did during the funeral of Pope Francis. This would carry significant geopolitical weight amid heightened global tensions from the ongoing war in Ukraine to renewed instability in the Middle East. Zelenskiy last met Vance in February in the White House, when the two men clashed fiercely in front of the world's media.
