El-Sayed Secures Michigan Senate Democratic Nomination

According to Politico report, El-Sayed defeated the establishment-backed Representative and four-term Congresswoman Haley Stevens in a closely watched primary election. His victory has instantly positioned him as a prominent new face of national progressive politics. El-Sayed is now expected to face Republican former Representative Mike Rogers in a high-stakes general election contest in November.

He was backed by progressive leaders including Bernie Sanders, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Elizabeth Warren. The Michigan primary election witnessed sharp disagreements over issues including healthcare, immigration and Israel policy. While Stevens and her allies criticised El-Sayed over allegations of antisemitism and sexism, El-Sayed's supporters accused the moderate Democrat's campaign of Islamophobia.

Trump Reacts To El-Sayed's Win

United States President Donald Trump also reacted to the result, calling it "great news" for Republicans. In a post on Truth Social, Trump called the democratic primary a "communist loser" and stated that his win will lead to the worsening of "crazy policies" of the Democrats.

“Great news for the Republican Party. El-Sayed, a Communist loser who hates Jews and Israel, is the projected winner in his race with the Socialist. As usual, the Polls were way off on this one. She was not expected to do nearly as well as she did. Now, the Dumocrats crazy policies will only get worse!” Trump wrote.
