Apple, known for its innovative technology and sleek designs, is now under scrutiny after a lawsuit claimed that some of its best-selling Apple Watch bands expose users to harmful chemicals linked to cancer. The lawsuit stems from a recent study conducted on 22 watch bands from various manufacturers in the United States. Shockingly, 15 of these bands were found to contain per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), chemicals associated with severe health issues, including cancer, birth defects, and fertility problems. Among the watch bands tested, several were produced by Apple.
Filed in the Northern District of California, the lawsuit specifically targets three Apple Watch bands: the Sport Band, which includes new basic Apple Watch models; the Ocean Band; and the Nike Sport Band, which comes with Nike-branded Apple Watches. Apple advertises these bands as being made from fluoroelastomer, a material praised for its durability and comfort. However, the lawsuit alleges that this material conceals the presence of PFAS chemicals, potentially putting users at risk.
PFAS Chemicals
PFAS chemicals, commonly referred to as "forever chemicals," are widely used in consumer products such as nonstick cookware, clothing, hygiene items, and cleaning products. They are inexpensive and highly effective, making them attractive to manufacturers. However, their harmful effects are well-documented.
PFAS compounds are linked to an increased risk of cancer, immune system suppression, and developmental issues in unborn children. They are bioaccumulative, meaning they can build up in the body over time, and they degrade very slowly, persisting in the environment for decades.
The revelation has caused panic among Apple Watch users, many of whom rely on the product for fitness tracking and daily wear. Social media platforms have been flooded with discussions about the risks posed by PFAS chemicals, with some users demanding transparency and accountability from Apple. Others have questioned the legitimacy of the claims and are awaiting further evidence.

Apple Defends Product Safety
Apple has responded to the lawsuit, asserting that its Watch bands are safe and undergo rigorous testing both internally and through independent labs. The company reiterated its commitment to phasing out PFAS from its products and manufacturing processes, acknowledging the challenges in finding suitable alternatives. In a statement to CNET, an Apple spokesperson emphasised that the company has been a leader in removing potentially harmful chemicals and remains dedicated to ensuring product safety.
