A Hindu widow in Bangladesh’s Jhenaidah district has alleged that she was raped, physically tortured, tied to a tree, and publicly humiliated after her attackers cut her hair and circulated a video of the act on social media. According to the survivor’s complaint, the woman had purchased a small parcel of land along with a two-storey house in Kaliganj municipality around two-and-a-half years ago for nearly 2 million taka from a local man, Shahin, and his brother. She told police that soon after the purchase, Shahin allegedly began harassing her and making inappropriate advances, which she repeatedly rejected.

Assault During Visit By Relatives

The woman alleged that on Saturday evening, when two relatives from her village were visiting her home, Shahin and another man identified as Hasan forcibly entered the house and sexually assaulted her. She further stated that the accused demanded 50,000 taka (approximately Rs 37,000). When she refused, the men allegedly assaulted her relatives and drove them out of the house, leaving the woman alone with her attackers.

Tied To Tree, Hair Cut And Video Circulated

As per her statement, the accused later tied her to a tree, cut off her hair, and recorded the act on video, which was subsequently circulated on social media. The survivor said she was physically tortured and eventually lost consciousness. Local residents later rescued her and rushed her to Jhenaidah Sadar Hospital for treatment.

Medical Findings And Police Action

Dr Md Mostafizur Rahman, superintendent of Jhenaidah Sadar Hospital, said the woman initially did not disclose the full details of the incident. “Later, following medical examinations, it became clear that she had been subjected to abuse,” he said.

After receiving treatment, the woman filed a formal complaint at Kaliganj Police Station, naming Shahin and Hasan as the accused. Jhenaidah Additional Superintendent of Police Billal Hossain confirmed her statement has been recorded and said a detailed investigation is underway.
