A Hindu youth was fatally shot on Monday evening in broad daylight at Kopalia Bazar in Ward No. 17 of Manirampurupazila, Jashore district, Bangladesh, sparking panic among locals. The victim has been identified as 45-year-old Rana Pratap, son of Tushar Kanti Bairagi from Arua village in Keshabpurupazila.

According to eyewitnesses and police sources, unidentified gunmen opened fire on Pratap while he was present at the market, leaving him with multiple bullet wounds. He succumbed to his injuries on the spot. Media reports confirm that the attackers fled immediately after the shooting. 

Personnel from Manirampur Police Station rushed to the scene following the incident. Officer-in-Charge Rajiullah Khan said, “We are at the scene. Preparations are underway to recover the body and conduct a post-mortem examination.” Police have launched an investigation to identify and apprehend the attackers.

Rising Violence Against Hindu Minorities

This killing marks the fifth violent attack targeting Hindus in Bangladesh over the past three weeks amid ongoing protests and heightened social tensions. On December 31, Hindu businessman Khokon Chandra Das from Shariatpur district was attacked by a mob while returning home from his medical shop. He was stabbed, beaten, doused in petrol, and set on fire. Das succumbed to his injuries on January 3 at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

Earlier, Bajendra Biswas was shot dead in Mymensingh, and 27-year-old Dipu Chandra Das, a Hindu garment worker in Bhaluka, Mymensingh district, was lynched on December 18 after false allegations of blasphemy. He was beaten, hanged from a tree, and set on fire. Police later confirmed no evidence supported the accusation and arrests were made in connection with the lynching.
