A fresh political storm has erupted in Bangladesh over the killing of radical activist Sharif Osman Hadi, after the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) alleged that the prime accused in the shooting secured bail twice with the help of a senior Jamaat-e-Islami leader and lawyer.

The claims have added a new layer to an already volatile situation, with nationwide protests, communal tension and a sharp diplomatic standoff between India and Bangladesh unfolding in the aftermath of Hadi’s death.

BNP flags Jamaat link In Hadi killing

Speaking during a televised panel discussion on Ekushey Television, BNP executive committee member Nilofer Chowdhury Moni alleged that the man who shot Hadi had been granted bail on two occasions by Shishir Manir, a prominent Jamaat-e-Islami leader and senior lawyer. “The man who fired at Hadi, his background must be examined carefully. Who helped him get bail twice? Shishir Manir did. I am saying this responsibly,” Moni said, questioning how the accused managed to walk free despite repeated arrests and serious allegations.

According to BNP leaders, the suspect was arrested twice within a short span and was found in possession of large sums of money, yet managed to secure bail both times. They also alleged that the accused had links with multiple student outfits across the political spectrum, including Jamaat-e-Islami Chhatra Shibir.

Financial Trail Under Scanner

Investigators probing the Hadi killing have uncovered a substantial financial trail linked to the prime suspect, identified as Faisal Karim Masud. The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of Dhaka Police has seized nearly 67 lakh taka from his bank account and traced transactions estimated at around 127 crore taka.

Officials said several cheque books tied to uncashed transactions worth hundreds of crores of taka have also been recovered during raids. Security agencies, however, have stated that there is no confirmed evidence so far of the suspect fleeing the country.

Sharif Osman Hadi was shot by masked attackers in Dhaka earlier this month and later succumbed to his injuries after being airlifted to Singapore for treatment. His death was announced on December 18 by interim government chief adviser Muhammad Yunus.Hadi, founder of the radical student group Inqilab Manch and a vocal critic of India and former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, was a polarising figure. His killing triggered violent protests across several Bangladeshi cities, including attacks on cultural centres and media houses.
