The body of a Bangladeshi Hindu college student who had been missing for nearly a week was recovered from a river in Naogaon district, triggering grief among family members and renewed concerns over the safety of minorities in the country. According to The Daily Agrajatra Pratidin, the deceased was identified as Abhi, a fourth-year honours student in the Management Department at Naogaon Government College. Police recovered the body of an unidentified young man floating in a river in Naogaon on Saturday afternoon.
The discovery was initially reported locally before images and information circulated on social media. After seeing the posts online, Abhi’s family rushed to the riverbank and identified the body based on the clothes he was wearing when he left home, officials said. Abhi was the eldest son of Ramesh Chandra, a resident of Santahar in Adamdighiupazila of Bogura district.
Student Went Missing After Leaving Home
Family members said Abhi had gone missing on January 11 after leaving home following an argument. When he failed to return, relatives searched the homes of family members, friends and other places he was known to visit. After several days without any information, the family filed a general diary (GD) at Adamdighi police station, reporting him missing.
Abhi was described by relatives and classmates as a hardworking and meritorious student with aspirations of completing his honours degree and securing a stable job to support his family. His final examinations were scheduled to take place in the coming days, making the loss even more devastating.
Police Await Autopsy Report
Naogaon Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Niamul Islam confirmed that the body has been sent to the morgue for a post-mortem examination. “The exact cause of death will be known after the autopsy report is received,” he said, adding that the circumstances surrounding Abhi’s death remain unclear.
Family members and local residents have raised questions over whether the death was accidental or involved foul play. Police said an investigation is underway. The incident comes amid growing concern over the safety of minority communities in Bangladesh, with rights groups and activists calling for thorough investigations and accountability in cases involving unexplained deaths.
