Danish MP Rasmus Jarlov has issued a stark warning over US President Donald Trump’s renewed remarks on Greenland, saying any attempt by Washington to seize the Arctic island would amount to an act of war. Speaking to CNN on Tuesday, Jarlov said Denmark would be left with no choice but to resist militarily if Trump moved to invade Greenland, despite the overwhelming power imbalance between the two countries.

His comments come as tensions escalate ahead of the World Economic Forum in Davos, where Trump has said Greenland will be on the agenda, and after the US president publicly shared private messages from French President Emmanuel Macron and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, fuelling concerns among European leaders about sovereignty and security in the Arctic.

'Greenland Not For Sale'

Earlier, a Danish lawmaker delivered a message to US President Donald Trump during a debate in the European Parliament, rejecting renewed American claims over Greenland. Anders Vistisen, a Member of the European Parliament from Denmark, responded sharply to Trump’s assertion that the United States should take control of the Arctic island for national security reasons.

“Let me put this in words you might understand, Mr President: f*** off,” Vistisen said, drawing widespread attention and reaction across the chamber. His remarks underscored growing frustration in Europe over what officials describe as a challenge to sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Trump Revives Greenland Claims

Donald Trump has in recent days reiterated his long-standing view that Greenland is strategically vital to US interests, arguing that Washington needs greater influence in the Arctic to counter Russia and China. He has suggested that economic pressure could be applied against European allies who resist such moves, including the possibility of tariffs.

Greenland is a self-governing territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, and both Danish and Greenlandic leaders have repeatedly stated that the island is not for sale. Officials in Copenhagen and Nuuk have dismissed Trump’s claims as unacceptable interference.

Provocative Social Media Posts

The controversy intensified after Trump shared a series of posts on his social media platform Truth Social showing images that depicted Canada, Greenland and Venezuela as part of the United States. One post featured an old photograph of Trump in the Oval Office alongside several European leaders, with a US flag map portraying the territories as American.

Another post showed Trump with Vice-President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio raising a US flag in Greenland beside a sign reading, “Greenland US Territory Est 2026.” The images sparked backlash among European officials, who described them as inflammatory and misleading.

Security Tensions In Arctic

Trump’s comments come amid increased focus on Greenland’s strategic importance. On Tuesday, he spoke with NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte and said he would meet various parties on the issue in Davos, reiterating that Greenland is integral to both American and global security.
