Japan Earthquake: A strong earthquake measuring 6.3 magnitude hit northern Japan on Friday. According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, the quake struck off the coast of Miyagi Prefecture at a depth of around 50 kilometres. Authorities confirmed that no tsunami warning has been issued so far.

According to reports, the Japanese government hasissued an emergency earthquake warning for several northern prefectures, including Miyagi, Aomori, Iwate, Fukushima, and Akita. The alert comes after seismic activity was detected in the region. Social media users have posted videos on social media showing ceiling lights shaking during the earthquake. 

Japan is among the most earthquake-prone countries in the world. Earthquakes, both minor and major occur frequently here. Earlier on April 20, Japan had issued a special advisory warning of a possible major earthquake of magnitude 8 or higher. The alert covered more than 180 cities from Hokkaido to Chiba.

The government's warning comes after a powerful 7.7 magnitude quake struck off the Sanriku coast and was felt as far away as Tokyo, several hundred kilometres away. However, authorities reported no immediate damage or injuries.

What Is An Earthquake?

An earthquake is the sudden shaking of the ground caused by movement of Earth’s tectonic plates beneath the surface. The shaking can range from mild tremors to very strong ones that can damage buildings and infrastructure.
