Guadeloupe Car Crash: A Christmas event in the French Caribbean territory of Guadeloupe turned into a devastating scene on Friday evening after a vehicle drove into a crowd gathered for holiday preparations in the coastal town of Sainte-Anne. Authorities confirmed that at least 10 people were killed, while dozens sustained injuries, including several reported to be in critical condition.

The incident unfolded around 7:30 pm at Schoelcher Square, a busy pedestrian zone located opposite the town hall and the church. Emergency responders rushed to the site after bystanders reported bodies lying on the roadway and chaotic scenes across the waterfront promenade.

Local officials said the cause of the crash remains unknown. Authorities said the driver, whose identity has not been released, “remained on the scene” after the crash and has been taken into custody for questioning. Firefighters, police units and paramedics were deployed within minutes. The Mayor of Sainte-Anne activated a crisis management team, which arrived on-site to oversee rescue and coordination efforts.

Multiple Casualties, Children Among Injured

Officials reported 19 total victims, including the 10 fatalities. Three people are in serious condition, while others were transported to nearby hospitals with varying injuries. Early accounts suggested that children were among those hurt, as families had gathered to set up stalls and decorations for the weekend’s Christmas events.

Footage shared online showed residents assisting the wounded while first responders cordoned off the area. Flashing lights from ambulances illuminated the waterfront as rescuers moved quickly to stabilise victims.

Sainte-Anne, a popular tourist town with roughly 23,000 residents, is known for its lively Christmas markets and Afro-Caribbean cultural celebrations. Friday’s tragedy has left the community shaken, with locals describing the scene as “unimaginable” and “horrific.” Authorities have urged residents to avoid the centre of town as investigators work through the night.

The tragedy drew comparisons to an incident last year in Magdeburg, Germany, where a car ploughed through a crowded Christmas market, killing two people and injuring dozens. While motives in that case became the focus of a lengthy probe, officials in Guadeloupe say it is too early to determine whether Friday’s event was accidental or deliberate.
