An Indian-origin former physician has been sentenced to six months in prison and three years of probation after pleading guilty to placing a hidden recording device in a staff bathroom at an Ohio hospital. Advait Deshmukh received his sentence in Lucas County Common Pleas Court following a guilty plea to one count of attempted tampering with evidence and seven counts of voyeurism.
Court records show his probation term will remain active through June 2029, and the terms of his sentencing require him to register as a sex offender for 15 years, undergo community control, attend Sexaholics Anonymous meetings, and continue court-mandated mental health and sex offender treatment.
The judge noted that Deshmukh plans to relocate to Franklin County, Ohio, where he will be required to register as a sex offender and maintain his court-ordered programs.
How did the Indian-origin doctor caught?
According to court records cited by local news outlets, Deshmukh illegally recorded individuals on at least 15 separate occasions between February 19 and May 28, 2025, in areas where victims had a reasonable expectation of privacy.

ProMedica confirmed that a hidden device was discovered in a staff area in June last year, prompting an immediate investigation by hospital police and the same-day identification of Deshmukh as a suspect. The attempted tampering charge stems from June 4 last year, when Deshmukh allegedly removed or destroyed the device upon learning of the investigation.
Deshmukh was later arraigned on January 28 this year, before Judge Michael R. Goulding, though officials have not disclosed how many victims were recorded or whether all impacted individuals have been formally notified.
Medical license active despite conviction
At the time of the alleged conduct, Deshmukh served as a third-year resident physician at the University of Toledo College of Medicine and Life Sciences, fulfilling clinical duties at ProMedica Toledo Hospital. Deshmukh’s designated clinical interests included endourology and urologic oncology, medical subspecialties focused on complex cancer care that heavily rely on a high level of patient trust.
Despite his criminal indictment and subsequent sentencing, public records indicated that as of early 2026, Advait Deshmukh’s medical license remained active with no public disciplinary actions recorded. State medical boards operate independently from criminal court proceedings, maintaining separate administrative processes to review, suspend, or revoke a physician's license following a criminal conviction.
