Amid escalating tensions in the Middle East, Iran on Saturday claimed that its Natanz nuclear facility was targeted in a strike. The ongoing conflict involving the United States, Israel, and Iran has entered its 22nd day. The Natanz uranium-enrichment ⁠facility was one of the three major nuclear sites targeted by the United States during strikes in June 2025. The other two facilities were the Fordow Fuel Enrichment Plant and the Isfahan Nuclear Technology Center. These sites form key parts of Iran’s nuclear program. 

According to Iran’s Tasnim news agency, Natanz Nuclear Facility was targeted in a strike on Saturday morning. However, it added that no radioactive ‌leaks ⁠occurred and residents near the site ⁠were not at risk. Iran’s nuclear programme has been a central focus of the ongoing tensions, with US President Donald Trump repeatedly stating that he will not allow Iran to develop nuclear weapons under any circumstances. 

“After Midnight Hammer, they were warned to make no future attempts to rebuild their weapons program, and in particular nuclear weapons, yet they continue. They’re starting it all over… One thing is certain: I will never allow the world’s number one sponsor of terror, which they are by far, to have a nuclear weapon,” Trump said after launching strikes on Iran on February 28.

Why Is Natanz Nuclear Facility Important?

The Natanz nuclear facility is one of Iran’s most important nuclear sites. It contains thousands of centrifuges used to enrich uranium. Much of the facility is built underground, which makes it difficult to destroy through airstrikes. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) closely monitored Iran’s nuclear program for years. However, access and inspections have become more limited during periods of tension. 

The Natanz nuclear facility is one of Iran’s most important nuclear sites. It is mainly used for uranium enrichment, a process that can produce fuel for nuclear power but can also be used to make material for nuclear weapons if enriched to a high level. Because of its size and role, Natanz has been at the center of international concerns about Iran’s nuclear activities for years.
