Hindus in Bangladesh are living in fear amid surge in violence targeting the minority community, following a series of lynchings, killings, sexual assaults, and arson attacks over the past month. One of the most horrific incidents was the lynching and public burning of 27-year-old Dipu Chandra Das, a Hindu garment factory worker at the Pioneer Knit Composite Factory in Bhaluka, Mymensingh district. Das was accused of blasphemy, with reports claiming he allegedly said all gods were equal. On December 18, a mob beat him, stripped him, hanged him from a tree, and set his body on fire. Police later said no evidence supported the blasphemy allegation, and several arrests were made.
Businessman Burned Alive In Shariatpur
On New Year’s Eve, 50-year-old Hindu businessman Khokon Chandra Das was attacked in Shariatpur district while returning home after closing his medical shop. According to Prothom Alo, his auto-rickshaw was stopped near Keurbhanga Bazar, where assailants beat him with sharp weapons, doused him in petrol, and set him on fire. He jumped into a pond to extinguish the flames and was rushed to Dhaka for treatment, but succumbed to his injuries days later.
Journalists And Media Houses Targeted
During the same period, mobs attacked the offices of leading Bangladeshi newspapers The Daily Star and Prothom Alo, setting parts of buildings on fire and trapping journalists on rooftops, raising concerns over press freedom and safety.
Public Shooting In Jashore
In another incident, Hindu man Rana Pratap Bairagi was shot dead in full public view at Kopalia Bazar in Monirampurupazila of Jashore district on Monday evening. Police said unidentified assailants opened fire around evening. Prothom Alo reported that Bairagi was the acting editor of Narail-based daily BD Khobor and was also associated with a local ice factory.

Hindu Widow Raped And Tortured
In Jhenaidah district, a Hindu widow alleged that she was raped, physically tortured, tied to a tree, and humiliated after her attackers cut her hair and circulated a video online. According to her complaint, she had bought land and a two-storey house in Kaliganj municipality around two-and-a-half years ago for nearly 2 million taka. She alleged that the seller, Shahin, began harassing her soon after.
The survivor told police that when two relatives were visiting her home, Shahin and another man, Hasan, forcibly entered the house and raped her. They allegedly demanded 50,000 taka, assaulted her relatives when she refused, and drove them away before torturing her.
