Missouri Teacher Scandal: A 30-year-old former substitute teacher from Dixon has been sentenced to 10 years in state prison after admitting to a series of offences involving middle-school students.
According to the New York Post reports, the teacher, identified as Carissa Jane Smith, entered guilty pleas to three charges, bringing an end to a case that had initially involved 19 serious felony counts, including statutory rape, sodomy, sexual trafficking of children, and child sex trafficking.
Cash Payments, Alcohol Supply And Solicitation Of Minors
Authorities cited by the New York Post said Smith approached several boys enrolled in the Dixon R-1 School District and offered them cash, often more than USD 100, in exchange for sexual acts. Some payments were made in person, while others were transferred through CashApp.
Interviews with students revealed that meetings occurred in varied locations, Smith’s home when her husband was away for work, inside her vehicle, and on isolated roads around the rural community. One student told detectives that another boy encouraged him to “make some money” and even drove him to Smith’s house before waiting outside in the car.
Investigators also found multiple instances in which Smith provided alcohol and marijuana to minors. In several encounters, she allegedly consumed the substances with them, further deepening concerns among law enforcement officials about the extent of grooming and coercion.
One victim recounted in court that Smith forced sexual acts on him and then attempted to soothe his panic by offering additional cash. Another boy claimed he had recorded a video of Smith performing a sexual act. Smith allegedly grabbed his phone and smashed it to prevent anyone from viewing the footage.
Snapchat Allegedly Used To Send Nude Photos
Smith frequently contacted the boys through Snapchat, sending nude images that included photos taken in the shower and explicit body shots. Several victims said she repeatedly warned them not to speak about the encounters. Investigators believe the abuse occurred between August 2023 and September 2024, with more students coming forward as the case progressed.
The 10-year prison term reflects the severity of the offences, though some families argued that the original charges warranted harsher punishment. Local authorities say they are still reviewing information from additional witnesses and have not ruled out further legal action.
