Melinda French Gates has said she was filled with “unbelievable sadness” after newly released US Justice Department documents once again brought her ex-husband Bill Gates’ past association with the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein into public focus. The philanthropist’s remarks come after more than three million pages of files linked to the Epstein investigation were released last week, reigniting scrutiny of Epstein’s ties with influential figures. 

In a preview clip from an upcoming appearance on NPR’s Wild Card podcast, Melinda Gates spoke candidly about how the renewed controversy affected her. “I’m happy to be away from all the muck,” she said, describing the revelations as reopening “memories of very painful times in my marriage.” She made it clear that she does not consider herself responsible for answering questions related to Epstein. “Whatever questions remain… those questions are for those people and for even my ex-husband. They need to answer to those things, not me,” she said. NPR said the full interview will be released on Thursday.

DOJ Files Reignite Questions About Epstein’s Network

The latest document release has once again highlighted Epstein’s efforts to build relationships with wealthy and powerful individuals, including Bill Gates, the Microsoft co-founder and one of the world’s richest men. Gates’ association with Epstein has been documented for years, but the newly released files have surfaced draft emails attributed to Epstein from 2013 that make explicit and unverified claims about Gates’ personal life.

Explosive Draft Emails And Unverified Claims

In one draft email written in the voice of Boris Nikolic, Epstein claimed he was caught in a “severe marital dispute” between Melinda and Bill Gates. The draft alleged that Epstein had helped Gates obtain antibiotics following alleged sexual encounters and facilitated illicit relationships, while also referencing requests for prescription drugs. The email warned of potential damage to philanthropic commitments if Gates’ marriage ended publicly.

Bill Gates Denies Allegations, Calls Claims ‘Absurd’

Bill Gates has categorically denied the allegations mentioned in the documents. A spokesperson said the claims are “absolutely absurd and completely false,” adding that the documents only show Epstein’s frustration at not maintaining a relationship with Gates and his attempts to entrap and defame the billionaire. Gates has previously acknowledged meeting Epstein, later calling the association a “huge mistake” and saying he believed Epstein could help raise money for the Gates Foundation. 

Melinda and Bill Gates announced their divorce in 2021 after 27 years of marriage. In her book, Melinda has written about Bill’s infidelity and his links to Epstein, describing them as deeply painful. In the NPR interview, she said her personal sorrow is overshadowed by empathy for Epstein’s victims. “I’m able to take my own sadness and look at those young girls and say, ‘My God, how did that happen to those girls?’” she said, adding that she hopes the women abused as minors will ultimately find justice.
