Gaza Crisis: Three years after the October 7, 2023, Hamas attack on Israel, Gaza remains devastated by a prolonged Israeli military campaign. The recent satellite images show the massive scale of destruction in Gaza, with entire neighbourhoods reduced to rubble, millions displaced and basic living conditions severely damaged despite a ceasefire.

Satellite Images Show Scale of Destruction

New satellite images available through Google Earth show how parts of Gaza have changed. Images comparing the area around Al-Qadisiyah School in Rafah in May 2022 with its condition in 2026 show massive destruction. According to a report by The Guardian, around 82 per cent of Gaza’s structures, nearly 2,00,000 buildings have suffered serious damage or been destroyed. Similarly, areas including Beit Lahiya, Beit Hanoun, Jabaliya, and Shuja'iya remain uninhabitable.

October 7 Attack And Israel's Military Campaign

The war which began after Hamas-led militants attacked southern Israel on October 7, 2023, has not completely stopped despite a US brokered ceasefire in 2025. About 1,200 people were killed and 251 people were taken hostage during the Hamas attack. Following the attack, Israel had responded with a large-scale military campaign aimed at destroying Hamas.

Displacement And Humanitarian Crisis In Gaza

Earlier in August, Gaza's Health Ministry stated that more than 74,000 Palestinians have been killed since the war began, while many more have been injured. The conflict has also destroyed homes, schools, hospitals, roads, and other infrastructure. In Gaza, many families are forced to move repeatedly to escape fighting and evacuation orders. Large numbers of people now live in tents and makeshift shelters on beaches, farmland and empty plots.

UN Warnings And Genocide Findings

To the world it may seem like the war has ended or entered a different phase, but the calm has not erased the fear as horrific killings by Israel continue in the strip. Despite discussions about peace plan, ceasefire, reconstruction and military withdrawals, Palestinians remain uncertain about whether the violence has truly ended. Also, Israel, which has been accused of committing genocide, maintains that its military will not fully withdraw from Gaza.

Earlier, a United Nations Commission of Inquiry had found that Israeli military operations have continued to cause “unprecedented death, injury and trauma” to Palestinian children. The commission, which last year concluded that Israel had committed genocide in Gaza, said the deliberate targeting of children was a key indicator of genocidal intent to destroy the Palestinians.

In a statement marking the third anniversary of the Hamas attack, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres’ said, "These horrors must never be repeated. The devastating hostilities that followed have inflicted untold suffering on Palestinians in Gaza, including massive loss of life, displacement and destruction. Civilians continue to endure intolerable conditions. Their suffering, too, demands an end now."
