An Indian-Australian family was targeted in a racist attack at an apartment complex in Morningside, eastern Brisbane, Australia. The incident took place late at night on October 19 when a 19-year-old man allegedly hurled racial slurs at the family and threatened to blow up the entire building. The accused has been charged in connection with the incident.

Indian Family Faces Racist Attack

According to Australia Today, the incident took place around 12:30 am when the accused, identified as Harley Adams, allegedly shouted racial insults at the family. He also threatened to blow up their apartment complex. While police prosecutors described the incident as an “extraordinary racist outburst” during the court hearing, the exact words used during the alleged abuse have not been widely reported publicly.

Accused Arrested

Reports from local media also suggest that Adams believed the family had complained to the police about him, leading to his eviction from the building. However, he reportedly became apologetic after learning that the family had not made any such complaint. Queensland Police arrested Adams at a local hotel on Tuesday. He was charged with offences related to threats and serious vilification.

Adams appeared before the Brisbane Magistrates Court through a video link on Wednesday. Magistrate Peter Saggers said threats of violence were treated seriously by the court. During the court hearing, it was also stated that Adams had allegedly threatened to blow himself up along with other people at the apartment complex.

However, Adams was granted bail with several conditions, including that he must wear an electronic monitoring device, stay away from the Morningside apartment complex and its residents, and report to a police station three times a week. The case has been adjourned until November 16.

Family Considers Leaving Australia

According to a report by 7News, the family is considering ending its rental agreement early and returning to India as the incident has left them deeply worried about their safety. The incident has renewed concerns about the safety of Indian-origin residents facing racial abuse abroad. Earlier on October 16, racist stickers targeting Indian migrants had also come to light in Australia.

The material featuring a derogatory caricature of an Indian man alongside offensive messages was found in Cessnock, New South Wales. Dan Repacholi, the local Federal Member of Parliament (MP), strongly condemned the material, calling the stickers "disgusting" and warning that hatred will not be tolerated in the community.

The message on the sticker read: “IS THIS YOUR CULTURE? WE DON'T LIKE IT! 32% of Australia's population is foreign born. India is at the top of that list. REMIGRATION NOW!” The material explicitly demands "REMIGRATION NOW!", a phrase deeply associated with hardline anti-immigration campaigns advocating for the deportation of non-white migrants.
