Nika Shakarami Latest News:  Iranian Authorities on Wednesday initiated the prosecution of journalists and activists over a BBC report that unearthed the alleged "gruesome rape and murder" of a 16-year-old girl by the security forces during protests over the death of Mahsa Amini in 2022. The BBC report published on Monday outlined how the minor girl - Nika Shakarami - was brutally killed during the clampdown of the regime's security forces.

The undercover police forces arrested Shakarami during the protests. A few days later Shakarami died under mysterious circumstances.

Gangraped And Beaten To Death: Report

According to the BBC report, written based on a classified internal document of Iran's paramilitary Revolutionary Guard, she was 'sexually molested' by the security forces members and later killed by batons and electronic stun guns for resisting the assault.

Despite the allegations by the family and activists, the Revolutionary Guard had denied any wrongdoing and stated that she died after falling from a tall building, something immediately disputed by her mother, who said her daughter had been beaten. Her death also sparked widespread protests in the country in 2022.

On Wednesday, Iran's Mizan news agency, run by the country's judiciary, dismissed the BBC story as "fake, incorrect and full of mistakes" without specifically addressing the alleged mistakes within the report.

The report published in Mizan was the government's first reaction to the BBC report, in which it said that "journalists and activists” have been summoned over the issue.

“The Tehran Prosecutor's Office filed a criminal case against these people,” Mizan said, with charges including “spreading lies” and “propaganda against the system.”

The first charge carries a potential maximum sentence of one and a half years in prison along with several lashes, whereas the second charge could result in imprisonment for up to one year, reported AP.
