Nobel Peace Prize 2025: The 2025 Nobel Peace Prize went to Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado for her tireless efforts in defending democracy and challenging authoritarianism. The announcement, made by the Norwegian Nobel Committee in Oslo, has drawn global attention, not only for the choice of laureate but also for the question many people ask each year that how much does a Nobel Peace Prize winner actually receive?
Nobel Peace Prize 2025: What’s The Reward?
According to official information from the Nobel Foundation, this year’s Nobel Peace Prize carries a cash award of 11 million Swedish kronor (SEK), approximately USD 1 million (₹8.7 crore). The monetary value is funded from the returns on Alfred Nobel’s endowment, established more than a century ago.
Along with the prize money, laureates receive a gold medal, a diploma, and the enduring global recognition that accompanies the world’s most prestigious humanitarian award.
History Behind The Nobel Foundation
The Nobel Prize was first awarded in 1901, following the will of Alfred Nobel, a Swedish chemist and inventor of dynamite. In his will dated November 27, 1895, Nobel left most of his estate, worth over SEK 31 million (now equivalent to about SEK 2.2 billion), to establish a fund “for those who have conferred the greatest benefit to humankind.”
Over time, the prize categories expanded to six fields, Peace, Literature, Physics, Chemistry, Physiology or Medicine, and Economic Sciences. The Peace Prize, uniquely, is awarded in Oslo, while the others are presented in Stockholm.
The Peace Prize medal was designed by Norwegian sculptor Gustav Vigeland and Swedish engraver Erik Lindberg. The medal originally contained 23-carat gold weighing 192 grams. Since 1980, it has been made of 18-carat recycled gold, now weighing about 196 grams, maintaining its classic 6.6 cm diameter.
The front displays a portrait of Alfred Nobel, while the reverse shows three men embracing, symbolizing the fraternity among nations. The Latin inscription reads, “Pro pace et fraternitate gentium” — “For peace and fraternity among peoples.”
How The Nobel Peace Prize Is Chosen
The Peace Prize, one of five established in Alfred Nobel’s 1895 will, is awarded each year by a five-member Norwegian Nobel Committee appointed by Parliament.
The selection process includes:
• Nominations open in September and close on February 1 the following year.
• Only specific nominators, including heads of state, lawmakers, university professors, and past laureates, can propose names.
• The committee reviews around 300 nominations annually and creates a shortlist by spring.
• Months of confidential evaluation follow, based on peace impact, international collaboration, and sustained results.
• The laureate is announced in October and honoured in Oslo on December 10, Alfred Nobel’s death anniversary.
