Nobel Peace Prize 2025: The White House sharply criticised the Norwegian Nobel Committee on Friday after US President Donald Trump was passed over for the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize, which was awarded instead to Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado.

White House Director of Communications Steven Cheung took to X (formerly Twitter) shortly after the announcement, praising Trump’s leadership and vowing that the president would continue his peace efforts regardless of recognition “President Trump will continue making peace deals, ending wars, and saving lives. He has the heart of a humanitarian, and there will never be anyone like him who can move mountains with the sheer force of his will. The Nobel Committee proved they place politics over peace.”

The statement came just hours after Trump himself criticised the Nobel Committee for its past decisions, particularly the 2009 award to former President Barack Obama. “Obama got it for doing nothing. He got elected and they gave him a prize for absolutely nothing but destroying our country,” Trump said during a televised interview.

‘Grapes Are Sour’ Moment For The White House?

The Nobel Committee’s choice of María Corina Machado, described as Venezuela’s “Iron Lady” for her role in promoting democracy and human rights, reportedly left the White House fuming. Officials privately described the committee’s move as a “snub” to President Trump’s international diplomacy.

Trump, who returned to the Oval Office in January, has repeatedly cited his administration’s achievements in brokering peace deals. During several speeches, including one at Marine Corps Base Quantico, Trump said no leader in history had done what he had. “Nobody’s ever done that,” he told military officers. “Will I get the Nobel Prize? Absolutely not. They’ll give it to someone who didn’t do a damn thing.” The conflicts he listed included Israel–Iran, India–Pakistan, Armenia–Azerbaijan, Egypt–Ethiopia, Serbia–Kosovo, Thailand–Cambodia, Rwanda–DRC, and, most recently, Israel–Hamas under his proposed Gaza peace plan. Yet many of these claims remain disputed or unverified.

Despite the backlash, the Norwegian Nobel Committee maintained that its decision was independent and based solely on the laureate’s contributions to peace and democracy. According to sources in Oslo who spoke to Reuters, Trump’s name did appear among the nominations received. Still, the Norwegian Nobel Committee did not find his record aligned with the core principles of the Peace Prize, sustained peace, international cooperation, and long-term stability.“The Nobel Committee values durable peace efforts, not quick or publicity-driven interventions,” one source familiar with the deliberations said. Trump’s Gaza ceasefire plan, they noted, was announced too late after the committee had already taken its final decision.

Social media users have also weighed in, with one comment reading, “Tariff on Norway is unstoppable now,” while another joked, “We’re not far from the headline: Trump declares war on Norway for not giving him the Nobel Peace Prize.”
