In a surprising and slightly awkward moment at the Sharm el-Sheikh Peace Summit, US President Donald Trump called Pakistan’s Army Chief, General Asim Munir, his “favourite Field Marshal,” while laughing at remarks made by Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.

Addressing the gathering, which was convened to sign a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas, Trump said, “Prime Minister Sharif of Pakistan, and I have to say my favourite Field Marshal from Pakistan, who is not here, but the Prime Minister is here.” The brief yet striking moment of Trump praising a Pakistani general while Sharif stood awkwardly behind has gone viral as one of the more unusual highlights of the summit

The moment quickly drew attention from global media, as world leaders watched the interaction unfold. After the comment, Trump turned to Sharif, encouraging him to speak about the US-led efforts that contributed to peace in Gaza. Sharif later took the podium, expressing gratitude to Trump and once again praising the former US president’s role in resolving conflicts in South Asia and the Middle East.

Trump’s Praise For India

Addressing world leaders, Trump described India as a “great country” and hailed PM Modi as a “very good friend” who has done a “fantastic job.” He then turned to Shehbaz Sharif, asking, “I think that Pakistan and India are going to live very nicely together, right?” The Pakistani premier smiled uneasily as Trump continued, calling both leaders “great leaders” from his perspective.

The summit itself was a historic day. As part of the US-mediated agreement, Hamas let go of 20 Israeli hostages after being held for two years and Israel released close to 2,000 Palestinian inmates. The ceasefire accord, which was signed by the United States, Egypt, Qatar, and Turkey, was welcomed as a breakthrough in the protracted Gaza conflict.

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi described the summit as “historic,” emphasizing that it opens a new era of regional diplomacy and stability. For India, the summit also reinforced its growing international influence, with Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh meeting Trump and al-Sisi to represent PM Modi in last-minute high-level talks.

The event highlighted India's growing diplomatic clout. Trump's open admiration for PM Modi indicates heightened India-US relations and is an indicator of India's active role in fostering stability in the region. Therefore, the Sharm el-Sheikh Peace Summit effectively bridged several diplomatic divides, marked historical hostage releases, and consolidated India-US-Pakistan dynamics, while paving the way for a more peaceful and stable Middle East.
