Sharm el-Sheikh summit: In a high-profile diplomatic event in Egypt’s Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh, US President Donald Trump praised India as a “great country” and lauded Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, while reportedly laughing at remarks made by Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. The summit, aimed at advancing Middle East peace, also witnessed the historic signing of a Gaza ceasefire declaration.
While addressing, Trump said, "India is a great country with a very good friend of mine at the top, and he has done a fantastic job. I think that Pakistan and India are going to live very nicely together..."
Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh also met President Trump on Monday, marking the first official interaction between an Indian minister and the US leader since Operation Sindoor. Singh attended the summit as a special envoy of PM Modi, who received a last-minute invitation from Trump and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi. The Indian delegation’s presence underlines India’s growing diplomatic influence in the region.

Historic Gaza Peace Agreement Signed by US, Egypt, Qatar, And Turkey
The summit witnessed the United States, Egypt, Qatar, and Turkey sign a historic statement assuring a Gaza ceasefire, marking two years of conflict between Israel and Hamas. At the ceremony, Trump highlighted, "The document is going to spell out rules and regulations… it's going to hold up," emphasizing the commitment of all the parties as guarantors of peace. The signing took place as Hamas released the final 20 of the Israeli hostages and Israel freed almost 2,000 of its predominantly Palestinian prisoners, in a major regional diplomatic breakthrough.
At a media briefing, President Trump highlighted the broader implications of the summit. “The momentous breakthrough we’re here to celebrate tonight is more than the end of the war in Gaza with God’s help; it will be a new beginning for an entire, beautiful Middle East,” he said. Trump called for a stable, prosperous, and terror-free region, emphasizing the importance of sustained collaboration among nations.
Egyptian President Al-Sisi Describes Summit As Historic
Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi described the agreement, stating that it is a "historic day" that seals a painful page in human history and provides the foundation for long-term political settlements, including a two-state solution. He added that the agreement opens a "new era of peace and stability" in the Middle East, emphasizing the strategic importance of regional diplomacy in ending the region's long-standing conflicts.
The summit also offered an opportunity for India to reinforce its international standing. President Trump’s public appreciation of PM Modi and India signals deepening bilateral relations, especially in light of global challenges requiring collaborative solutions. The interaction, along with India’s diplomatic engagement in the Gaza peace process, underscores New Delhi’s growing role in international peace initiatives.
