Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to embark on a crucial two-nation visit this week, aimed at strengthening India’s strategic partnerships and advancing its role in regional and global affairs. Beginning with Japan and followed by China, the visit is expected to focus on economic, technological, and security cooperation, while also reinforcing India’s diplomatic outreach in Asia.
At the invitation of Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, PM Modi will travel to Japan from August 29 to 30 for the 15th Annual Summit between the two countries. The visit comes at a time when the India-Japan Special Strategic and Global Partnership has witnessed consistent growth over the last eleven years.
In a statement released before his departure, PM Modi highlighted the importance of the summit:
“During my visit, we would focus on shaping the next phase in our Special Strategic and Global Partnership. We would endeavour to give new wings to our collaboration, expand the scope and ambition of our economic and investment ties, and advance cooperation in new and emerging technologies, including AI and Semiconductors.”

The leaders are also expected to review progress made across multiple domains while identifying new areas of cooperation. Cultural exchanges and civilizational linkages, which both nations value deeply, will also feature prominently in the discussions. A program outside Tokyo is scheduled, adding a personal touch to the visit.
From Tokyo To Tianjin: India At SCO
Following his engagements in Japan, PM Modi will travel to Tianjin, China, from August 31 to September 1, to participate in the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit at the invitation of President Xi Jinping. India has played an active role in the grouping, with PM Modi emphasising that during India’s presidency, the country “introduced new ideas and initiated collaboration in innovation, health, and cultural exchanges.” He reiterated India’s commitment to working with SCO members to address shared challenges and expand regional cooperation.
On the sidelines of the summit, PM Modi is also expected to hold meetings with Chinese President Xi Jinping, Russian President Vladimir Putin, and other key leaders, where discussions will likely touch upon global peace, regional security, and sustainable development.
Advancing India’s National Interests
The dual visit underscores India’s broader strategy of engaging with both traditional allies and regional partners to further national interests. “I am confident that my visits to Japan and China would further our national priorities and contribute to building fruitful cooperation in advancing regional and global peace, security, and sustainable development,” PM Modi stated.
