Russia on Sunday issued a stern condemnation of the United States’ airstrikes on Iranian nuclear facilities, describing the attacks as “irresponsible” and a “gross violation of international law.” In a statement released by the Russian Foreign Ministry, Moscow warned that the developments marked the beginning of a "dangerous escalation" that threatens both regional and global stability.
"It is already clear that a dangerous escalation has begun, fraught with further undermining of regional and global security," the Russian foreign ministry said, echoing growing international concerns about a deepening crisis in West Asia.
Kremlin Rules Out Immediate Contact With Trump
Amid rising tensions, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov confirmed that Russian President Vladimir Putin currently has no plans to speak with US President Donald Trump. “There are no such plans,” Peskov said, though he noted a call could be arranged quickly if necessary.
The comments came after the United States launched strikes on three major Iranian nuclear sites, Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan, in what Washington described as a major offensive to dismantle Iran’s nuclear capabilities. The sites are among the most fortified and strategic components of Iran’s nuclear infrastructure.
Russian Lawmakers And Leaders Respond
Leonid Slutsky, Chair of the Duma’s Committee on Foreign Affairs, criticised the US action as lacking any legal or military justification. “Trump has been dragged into the regime change scenario in Tehran just like in Iraq,” Slutsky told reporters.
Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, now deputy chair of the National Security Council, also weighed in. In a post on Telegram, Medvedev suggested that the strikes had failed to achieve their objective. “What have the Americans achieved by hitting three sites in Iran? It seems the critical infrastructure of the nuclear cycle has not suffered at all or only slightly,” he wrote.
In an address to the media on Sunday, President Donald Trump defended the strikes, saying they were “a spectacular military success.” He warned that further action would follow if Iran retaliates. “There will either be peace or tragedy for Iran,” Trump declared, stating he had coordinated with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
In response, Iran’s foreign minister, Abbas Araghchi, condemned the strikes as a “grave violation” of international law and the UN Charter. Araghchi emphasised that the attacks breached the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons and warned of severe, long-term consequences. “Iran reserves all options to defend its sovereignty, interests, and people under the UN Charter,” he asserted.
