Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, on Wednesday, boasted on social media about Islamabad diplomatic ability to forge a much-needed halt in the Iran-US war. He was quick to post on social media about his role in forging a two-week truce between the United States and Iran.
His X post categorically mentioned that “Lebanon” was part of the ceasefire deal. It means neither Israel nor the US should target Beirut. But as Israel pounded attacks on Lebanon, a key ally of Iran, the question triggered whether Beirut was a part of the Pakistan-mediated Iran-US ceasefire deal or not. In the diplomatic circle, it is viewed as the major diplomatic blunder as neither the US nor Israel have accepted that Lebanon war part of the ceasefire deal.
Who wrote Shehbaz Sharif's social media post on ceasefire?
According to a report by the Financial Times, Sharif made the two-week proposal public on social media after Munir spoke with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and US President Donald Trump. Later, Sharif, who framed the deal as Pakistan's initiative, desperately included a subject line at the top of his post: "draft - Pakistan's PM message on X", it said. The post included the mention of Lebanon.
The post is now viral on social media, where netizen are now questioning the credibility of Pakistan in forging the ceasefire.
Now, a bigger question: who wrote the social media post by Sharif, and did the White House have any say in it? According to a report by the New York Post, the White House had already seen and signed off on the statement before the Pakistan Prime Minister posted it.
White House knew Sharif's text before posting on X
Citing a White House official familiar with the communication, the report said that Trump did not write the statement, as some observers speculated on social media when Sharif initially posted the statement with the header: “Draft - Pakistan’s PM Message on X”. However, the official clarified the White House was taken in confidence on Lebanon before posting a big message on social media. However, in the contrary, Israel has pounded one of the biggest attack on Lebanon which killed more than 250 people.
Lebanon was not the part of Iran-US ceasefire deal: JD Vance
US Vice President JD Vance firmly discarded the claims of Lebanon being a part of the truce talks between Washington and Tehran, as the precarious two-week ceasefire comes into place.
Speaking to reporters ahead of his departure from Hungary, on whether Lebanon was included in the peace proposal, Vance said that the United States never made any such promises. He underlined that the ceasefire was aimed at a focus on Iran, and American allies--both Israel and the Gulf Arab states.
"We never made that promise. We never indicated that was going to be the case. What we said is that the ceasefire would be focused on Iran and the ceasefire would be focused on America's allies, both Israel and the Gulf Arab states."
The remarks by Vance put Pakistan PM Shehbaz Sharif in a tight spot after he had claimed that Lebanon was also a part of the peace deal--a claim firmly dismissed by both US President Donald Trump and Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu.
