India on Friday (local time) sharply responded to Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s remarks at the United Nations General Assembly session (UNGA) session, accusing Islamabad of using the global forum to repeat its familiar positions on Kashmir, Indus Waters Treaty and India-Pakistan conflict.

India's Response To Sharif's Remarks

Exercising India’s right of reply, First Secretary at India’s UN mission Petal Gahlot strongly criticised Pakistan’s remarks and its political and security record. Gahlot accused Pakistan of using the UN platform to make false claims while ignoring terrorism, minority rights and political instability at home. She criticised Pakistan’s military influence, referred to its record on terrorism and blasphemy laws, and violence and rights violations in Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir.

Gahlot said, "The views we heard emanate from those with a long record of bigotry and hatred. They claim to uphold security during the day; they actually carry out terrorism at night. This assembly was subjected to remarks about religious intolerance from the very regime whose mainstay is blasphemy laws. The world knows how minorities are treated in Pakistan. No pious platitude can mislead it."

The First Secretary also questioned Pakistan’s claims about democracy and human rights, saying, "We heard some hypocritical homilies about democratic rights and human values from a regime whose capital at this very moment is being fortified against its own people. And that, Mr. President, is happening because this is a regime of the army, by the army, and for the army. Their puppets may come and go but let us have no illusion about who calls the shots. The reality of Pakistan is expressed in its 27th Amendment and the lifelong immunity granted to its real ruler."

India's Strong Reply To Sharif’s Kashmir Remarks

On Pakistan’s PM references to Jammu and Kashmir, Gahlot said India considers the Union Territory an integral part of the country and redirected attention to Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir. She said, “‘References were made to the Indian Union territory of Jammu and Kashmir. This is an integral and inalienable part of my country and will always remain so. But if we must talk about Kashmir, let us turn our attention to the Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir. Ask the people of Rawalkot about the wanton killings, the brutal violence and the denial of basic rights that they have long experienced.”

What Sharif Said In His UN Speech

In his speech at the UNGA session, Sharif had raised the Kashmir issue and the Indus Waters Treaty. He said India’s decision to put the treaty in abeyance had no legal basis and warned that any attempt to restrict Pakistan’s water share would be treated as an act of war. Sharif also described Pakistan’s response during the May 2025 India-Pakistan military confrontation as successful and credited US President Donald Trump with helping prevent further escalation.

“But this requires a just and fair solution to the Kashmir dispute. For eight decades, the Kashmiri people have waited for the United Nations to fulfil its solemn commitment to a free and impartial plebiscite under its auspices. Generations have endured illegal occupation, arbitrary detention, extrajudicial killings, enforced disappearance, sexual violence, and collective punishment,” said Sharif.

On the military confrontation of last year, the Pakistani PM said, "His timely intervention came at a decisive juncture when two nuclear-armed neighbours stood at the brink of an all-out war. And, who knows, Mr President, the extent of devastation that could have taken place had President Trump not stepped in at this critical moment with clarity of thought and action."
