Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Thursday (local time) walked away without responding when confronted with pointed questions over terrorism and Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) chief Hafiz Saeed at the United Nations headquarters in New York. Sharif, who came to attend the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) session was questioned twice by the reporter, however, he did not answer either question.

What Was Sharif Asked About?

As Sharif entered the UN headquarters, an ANI journalist asked, "Prime Minister, when will you stop harbouring terrorists?" But the Pakistani Prime Minister did not answer and continued walking into the building while making a short-wave hand gesture. Later, as Sharif left the UN headquarters, the journalist again questioned him, asking, "When will you prosecute Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) chief Hafiz Saeed?" Sharif again did not respond.

The two exchanges were captured on video. In the first clip, Sharif can be seen arriving at the UN headquarters and walking past reporters as the questions are directed at him. A second clip shows him leaving the premises, when he is again asked about Saeed. He does not stop or give an answer on either occasion.

Who Is Hafiz Saeed?

Hafiz Muhammad Saeed, a resident of Sargodha in Pakistan's Punjab province, is designated as a terrorist under India's Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967. He is the founder of the terrorist organisation Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) and is wanted as an accused in the 26/11 Mumbai terror attack case.

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has also alleged that the Pahalgam terror attack was orchestrated by Pakistan-based operatives of the banned LeT. Saeed has been named accused no. 8 in the NIA's supplementary chargesheet.

India Targets Pakistan At UN

Earlier in the day, India strongly criticised Pakistan at the UN, accusing Islamabad of focusing on territorial ambitions and cross-border terrorism instead of addressing its economic problems. Exercising its right of reply at the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC), Indian diplomat Kshitij Tyagi said, “Pakistan would better serve its people by focusing on development, rather than by coveting territory of others or exporting terror, because neither these nor its theatrics in the Council would help repay the loans its economy survives on.”
