Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s praise for US President Donald Trump at the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) has drawn sharp reactions from netizens. During his address on Friday, Sharif credited Trump with helping prevent the 2025 India-Pakistan conflict from escalating into a larger war. His remarks, despite New Delhi’s consistent assertion that there was no third-party intervention, have left many users questioning the claim.

Pak PM Praises Trump

Addressing the UNGA, Sharif praised Trump for his “resolute and visionary leadership” and said the US president’s “timely intervention” had saved hundreds of millions of lives in South Asia. Thanking Trump, he said the US President had stepped in at a decisive moment when the two nuclear-armed neighbours were on the brink of an all-out war. Sharif also warned that South Asia must never again be allowed to reach such a dangerous point.

Netizens React To Sharif's Praise For Trump

Hours later, Trump posted Sharif’s video of thanking him on his Truth Social platform. However, the video, which is available online has triggered a wave of reactions, with several netizens taking a dig at the Pakistani prime minister for publicly praising and thanking Trump. Some users questioned the extent of the US role in the May 2025 ceasefire, while others mocked Islamabad’s repeated praise of the US president.

One user wrote, “WHO NEEDED RESCUING? The gratitude reveals more about May 2025 than Islamabad intended. At #UNGA81, PM @CMShehbaz credits President @realDonaldTrump with pulling India and Pakistan back from all-out war.” Another user wrote, “Great News! Pakistanis are Staying Home Because Of Trump!” A third user wrote, “Top Notch Bootlicker blabbing with no facts in sight or his mind.”

A fourth user added, “Pakistan’s entire foreign policy under this regime is to find any and every speaking platform to butter up President Trump for a simple pat on the back. Zero on policy, and even lower on self-respect and dignity. Sad for a country of 250 million people to be led by this absurdity.” Another user said, "All this for a pat on the back."

India Hits Back At Pakistan

Meanwhile, India has sharply responded to Sharif’s remarks at the UNGA session, accusing Islamabad of using the global forum to repeat its familiar positions on Kashmir, Indus Waters Treaty and India-Pakistan conflict. Exercising India’s right of reply, First Secretary at India’s UN mission Petal Gahlot strongly criticised Pakistan’s remarks and its political and security record.

Gahlot accused Pakistan of using the UN platform to make false claims while ignoring terrorism, minority rights and political instability at home. She criticised Pakistan’s military influence, referred to its record on terrorism and blasphemy laws, and violence and rights violations in Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir.
