South Korea's impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol was on Wednesday arrested following a confrontation between law enforcement officers and his security guards. This marked the second attempt by the police to apprehend Yoon, as his security personnel had previously blocked the arrest. Despite the standoff, Yeol was eventually taken into custody.
Yoon had been hiding at his Hannam-dong residence for several weeks. Over a thousand investigators and police officers were deployed to capture him. Yoon had announced the imposition of martial law in South Korea, which led to widespread protests across the country. People took to the streets, and the opposition entered the parliament to vote against it. Later, Yoon apologised for the declaration.

A joint team of high-ranking corruption investigators and police were trying to determine if the martial law imposed on December 3 could be considered an attempted rebellion. Despite a court order to detain Yoon, the Presidential Security Service insisted that it was their duty to protect the former president. They surrounded the entire complex with barbed wire and blocked roads with buses.
As the situation escalated, South Korea's acting leader and Deputy Prime Minister Choi Sang-mok issued a statement urging law enforcement agencies and the Presidential Security Service to ensure that there should be no physical confrontation.
Before the arrest, several police officers wearing black jackets were seen outside Yoon's residence. Many of them searched the surrounding hilly compounds to find a way into the residence.
Eventually, some officers succeeded. They used ladders to climb over buses and managed to enter the premises. Yoon's lawyer stated that the Security Service would continue to protect him, as the arrest warrant issued by Seoul's Western Court was illegal.
