Thailand Train Accident News: A train traveling from Thailand's capital to the country's northeast was derailed on Wednesday after a construction crane fell on top of one of its carriages, killing at least 29 people and injuring at least 64, news agency Reuters reported citing, police.
The accident took place on Wednesday morning in the Sikhio district of Nakhon Ratchasima province, 230 km (143 miles) northeast of Bangkok, on a train bound for Ubon Ratchathani province.

What led to crash?
Local police told Reuters by phone that a crane working on a high-speed rail project collapsed and hit the passing train, causing it to derail and briefly catch fire. The fire has been extinguished and rescue work is now underway, police said.

Thailand Transport Minister orders probe
Addressing the media after the crash, Thailand’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport, Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn, said he has ordered an immediate and comprehensive investigation following a devastating accident in which a construction crane collapsed onto a long-distance passenger train, resulting in multiple fatalities and injuries.
According to Phiphat, he was informed of the incident involving Special Express Train No. 21, operating on the Krung Thep Aphiwat Station–Ubon Ratchathani route, which was struck by a falling crane on the section between Nong Nam Khun Station and Sikhio Station in Nakhon Ratchasima province. According to media reports, the train was carrying 195 passengers and staff, based on the seating plan.

The minister said that the crane was working on a high-speed rail project when it collapsed and hit the passing train, causing it onto derail and briefly catch fire. Images shared by the ministry showed carriages overturned next to shrubland and firefighters extinguishing a blaze as smoke billowed out.
The elevated high-speed rail line, one of several under construction in Thailand, was being built above the existing rail line.
