The feud between tech magnate Elon Musk and US President Donald Trump has erupted afresh, with Musk delivering a bitter criticism of Trump's flagship domestic policy, the 'Big Beautiful Bill'. On Sunday, Musk labeled the broad tax-and-spending bill "utterly insane and destructive," warning that it would kill millions of jobs and deeply hurt America's future competitiveness. Using X (formerly Twitter), the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX remarked that the Senate's new 940-page version would "provide giveaways to industries of the past while severely hurting industries of the future. The latest draft Senate bill will kill millions of jobs in America and inflict massive strategic damage on our nation," Musk wrote. "Completely insane and destructive. It gives subsidies to industries of the past while deeply hurting industries of the future. In a separate post earlier, Musk cautioned that the bill would increase the national debt by 5 trillion USD, calling it the "biggest increase in history" and taking the US on a "fast lane to debt slavery."
A Timeline Of Trump-Musk Tensions
It is not the first time the two public figures have come into conflict. Earlier this month, Musk called the bill a "disgusting abomination," for which Trump retorted with fierce words, accusing the billionaire of being "crazy" and suggesting that Musk's rants were fueled by drugs. The feud briefly simmered when Musk apologized publicly and removed tweets associating Trump with the Jeffrey Epstein files. But Musk stoked the controversy again this week, declaring that enacting the bill would be "political suicide for the Republican Party."
Musk, who previously worked closely with Trump through the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), contends the bill reverses years of cost-saving reforms he championed. He claims deep tax cuts and massive military appropriations would balloon the deficit, hurt government efficiency, and undermine America's ability to compete against adversaries such as China. The billionaire’s posts have added fresh arguments for fiscal conservatives and Democrats alike, who claim the bill is reckless and unsustainable.
What is Trump's 'Big Beautiful Bill'?
At the center of the conflict is Trump's suggested bill, which aims to solidify his second-term economic agenda. The bill would make the 2017 tax reductions permanent, end taxes on tips and overtime pay, increase defence expenditures, and increase funding for border security. But it also suggests deep cuts to Medicaid and nutrition assistance programs, something critics argue would hurt low-income and elderly Americans. The most recent version revealed in the Senate introduced provisions to channel dollars to rural hospitals, in a bid to appease doubting Republican senators before Trump's self-imposed July 4 deadline for enactment.
The fresh spat has shaken Washington as Senate Republicans gear up for a key procedural vote on Saturday to begin formal debate on the multi-trillion-dollar bill. Trump, who has referred to the bill as an "ultimate victory," has threatened that not passing the bill would be "the ultimate betrayal" of American voters. But Democrats have slowed the proceedings by insisting that clerks read the full 940-page document on the Senate floor. At the same time, Trump has intensified pressure on his fellow Republicans, criticising openly North Carolina Senator Thom Tillis for having voted against the bill.

As the July 4 deadline approaches, the future of the 'Big Beautiful Bill' hangs in the balance. Musk's influence and his huge online network might affect public sentiment and make it harder for Trump to rush the bill through. Whatever the outcome, the fallout marks a clear split between America’s populist conservatives and libertarian tech elite, and hints that the once-powerful Trump-Musk alliance may be gone for good.
