US President Donald Trump on Tuesday chided high tariff charging nations, asserting that reciprocal tariffs were in the offing and would be implemented soon. During his address to the Joint Session of Congress, Trump mentioned that the European Union, China, Brazil and India were among the high tariff-charging nations.
Trump said India charges auto tariffs higher than 100 per cent and the US was mulling countermeasures, saying that move was aimed at making “America Rich Again."
“Other nations charge the US tremendously higher tariffs than the US charges them. It’s very unfair. Whatever they tariff us, we will tariff them. Whatever they tax us, we will tax them,” Trump said.
The US President said reciprocal tariffs will kick in on 2 April. “I wanted to make it April 1, but I didn’t want to be accused of April Fool’s Day," he added.
Trump also highlighted his government efficiency initiative, the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), aimed at reducing federal government waste.
Besides, Trump hailed the lowest-ever recorded illegal border crossings last month, touting it as a significant achievement in his administration's immigration policies.
Speaking over the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war, Trump said he was working tirelessly to end the ‘savage’ conflict. "I am also working tirelessly to end the savage conflict in Ukraine. Millions of Ukrainians and Russians have been needlessly killed or wounded in this horrific and brutal conflict, with no end in sight. The United States has sent hundreds of billions of dollars to support Ukraine's defense," Trump said.

The President also criticised US’ European allies, pointing out that they spend more on Russian oil and gas than on defending Ukraine, while the US shoulders the majority of the responsibility.
