Tesla In India: US based electric vehicle manufacturer Tesla is reportedly considering a local partnership to establish its presence in India. According to a report by The Hindu Business Line, sources stated that Tesla is in discussions with Mukesh Ambani and Reliance Industries regarding a potential joint venture to construct a manufacturing plant in the country.
As per The Hindu Business Line report, a person familiar with the situation mentioned that, “Talks are at initial stages and have been ongoing for over a month.” The intention behind these discussions is not for Reliance Industries to enter the automotive sector but rather to enhance capabilities for electric vehicles in India. As per the report, another resource stated, “While the role of RIL hasn’t been crystalised yet, it is expected that the Indian conglomerate may play a significant hand in establishing the manufacturing facility and the allied ecosystem for Tesla in India.”
In addition to this, previously, reports have surfaced regarding Tesla actively working towards strengthening its position in the Indian market. The EV manufacturer is looking for a suitable location for setting up an electric vehicle manufacturing facility.
According to reports, both the Maharashtra and Gujarat governments have presented appealing land deals to Tesla for this. This manufacturing plant from Tesla will require an investment of approximately $2 billion to $3 billion and will serve both the domestic and international markets for Tesla's electric vehicles. Tesla plans to send a team of experts to look for suitable locations across India for its proposed EV manufacturing plant.
Moreover, Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla in a X Spaces session said, “India is now the most populous country in the world, based on population. India should have electric cars just like every other country has electric cars. It's a natural progression to provide Tesla electric vehicles in India.”
