American automobile manufacturer Ford recently filed a patent for deployable screen doors, a useful addition aimed at improving the off-road experience for drivers. This patent, initially submitted in October 2020 after the Bronco's launch, showcases a network of screens that can either deploy automatically or by the driver's command.

Unlike the current Bronco model, the vehicle in the patent images shows a different design, but the technology goes beyond just doors. Motors allow the screens to move, covering removable roof panels as well. However, whether this is preferred over enjoying the open sky remains uncertain.

These screens offer added security, especially for passengers worried about falling out. Ford also hints at broader safety benefits. Electric motors power the screens and in case of an impact, sensors can activate a pyrotechnic device to deploy them quickly, as long as no obstructions are detected. However, the effectiveness of such rapid deployment remains to be seen.

Besides the deployable screen doors, Ford has also expanded its patents to include an innovation in autonomous vehicles: swivelling seats. This patent features an advanced system of overhead and knee airbags designed specifically for autonomous vehicles equipped with swivel seats. These cleverly designed airbags can deploy from both overhead and one side of the seat, providing comprehensive protection for passengers' upper bodies and lower limbs.

Ford's commitment to safety innovation is further showcased through its rear inflatable seat belt airbags, a feature first seen in Spanish-manufactured Ford Mondeo models from 2016 to 2020. These specialised airbags remain inflated for about six seconds, offering prolonged protection during critical events like vehicle roll-overs. They also tighten the seat belt to reduce the risk of head injuries.
