Whether you just got a new car or have had one for a while, keeping it in good shape is key to making sure it keeps running for a long time. Following basic maintenance tips is essential to make your car run smoothly for a long time. Regular check-ups and servicing are important to prevent breakdowns, avoid expensive fixes and keep you safe while driving.
Oil Levels
Regularly check your car's oil level using the dipstick. Ensure it falls between the minimum and maximum marks. Low oil can lead to engine damage, so top up if needed. Refer to your owner's manual for the correct oil type.
Tyres
Check your tyres for wear, splits, bulges, and tread depth. The minimum legal tread depth is 1.6mm, but for winter, aim for 3mm for better traction. Also, maintain the correct tyre pressure as per your owner's manual.

Wiper Blades
Inspect your wiper blades for splits and cracks. Replace them when necessary. In winter, prevent them from freezing by placing a thin sheet between the blades and the windscreen or using de-icer.
Coolant
Ensure your coolant level is adequate, especially before long journeys to prevent engine overheating or freezing. Check the coolant when the engine is hot and use the correct coolant type as per your handbook.
Lights
Regularly check all lights – headlights, fog lights, etc., to ensure they are working correctly. Have someone walk around the car while you operate the lights.
Battery
Check the battery terminals for cleanliness and tightness. Clean off corrosion with hot water and apply petroleum jelly or use products designed for battery terminals. If the engine struggles to start, get the battery checked, especially if it's over four years old.
Engine Air Filter
Replace the air filter every 12 months or 20,000 km to maintain fuel efficiency and engine power. Refer to your vehicle handbook for instructions on locating and replacing the filter.

Brakes

Air Conditioning
