The number of cyber crimes in Bihar has surged nearly fourfold over the past two and a half years. While 1,606 cases were registered in 2022, the figure rose to 4,801 in 2023 and 5,712 in 2024. By the end of May 2025, 3,258 cases had already been reported.

To address the growing backlog of pending samples at the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL), the state government is establishing two new cyber FSLs in Patna and Rajgir. CID ADG Parasnath announced at a press conference on Wednesday that investigations at the new labs are expected to start within four to six months, which will quadruple the speed of sample analysis and facilitate faster trials and punishments for cyber criminals.

The National Forensic Science University (NFSU), Gandhinagar, has been appointed as a technical consultant for setting up the labs. The Home Department has approved Rs 13.66 crore for the project, and an MoU has been signed with NFSU.

The institution will provide consultancy on equipment, assist in procurement, and offer specialised training in cybercrime investigation. The agreement will remain effective for five years.

Following the implementation of the new criminal law, FSL investigation has become mandatory in cases with punishments of over seven years, adding to the backlog. Currently, Patna FSL’s cyber branch processes technical exhibits such as mobile phones, laptops, and CCTV footage. Last year, 255 cases were received, but only 135 samples were processed.

Till July 2025, just 75 out of 206 samples have been investigated. The new FSLs are expected to significantly expedite these investigations.
