In a move aimed at curbing illegal sand mining and transportation, the Bihar Mines and Geology Department has made it mandatory for vehicles transporting sand to be equipped with GPS tracking systems. The department has also fixed designated routes for sand-laden vehicles to ensure real-time monitoring of their movement.
According to officials, vehicles carrying sand from authorised sand ghats will now operate only on pre-approved routes. Their movement will be continuously tracked through a GPS-based system, with data being relayed to a dedicated control room established for monitoring purposes. Any deviation from the prescribed route will be flagged, and strict action will be taken against violators.
The department stated that the decision was taken to strengthen surveillance and prevent illegal mining, transportation, and sale of sand across the state. In addition, district administrations have been directed to identify routes and locations commonly used for illegal sand mining and transportation, so that enforcement can be intensified.
The new system is expected to enhance transparency and accountability in sand transportation and help the government crack down on illegal activities in the sector.
